Orthodontic treatment can include a wide variety of treatment types and methods. The ultimate goal of orthodontics is to improve oral health by aligning the teeth and bite for effective chewing and hygiene. The type of treatment recommended depends on the individual needs of each patient. Most cases can be effectively treated with braces and other traditional orthodontic methods. Some severe cases may require surgical orthodontics, such as jaw surgery.
To determine the best type of treatment for any patient, an orthodontic evaluation will need to be conducted, after which recommendations can be made. In this article we will discuss traditional braces and surgical orthodontics to help you understand these options and determine the best treatment plan for you or your child.
What Are Braces?
Traditional braces consist of metal brackets and wires that are used to shift the teeth into proper alignment. A square-shaped bracket is bonded to the front of each tooth and the archwire connects the brackets across each row of teeth. Additional items may be used with braces to exert additional force on the teeth, such as elastics (rubber bands) and chains. Clear braces are also available, consisting of brackets that blend in with your teeth for a more discreet appearance.
What is Surgical Orthodontics?
Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, refers to surgical procedures used to align the bite. Orthognathic surgery, or jaw surgery, involves restructuring the bones of the upper or lower jaw, sometimes both. Jaw surgery can correct structural issues that have existed since birth or that have developed over time due to other factors, such as injuries. In most cases braces will be placed on the teeth prior to surgery to shift the teeth into the ideal position, and will remain on the teeth for a few months afterwards to fine-tune the alignment.
When Are Braces Needed?
Braces are needed by patients who have teeth that are out of alignment and whose upper and lower teeth do not meet together properly. Braces may be recommended for crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. They are effective for mild to severe orthodontic cases, but some complex cases may require surgery as well.
When is Surgical Orthodontics Needed?
Surgical orthodontics may be recommended when braces alone are not effective for proper alignment. In some cases the jaw structure itself is the source of the bite misalignment, and the only way to correct it is to completely restructure the jaw, changing the shape and position. This can be extremely effective, providing lifelong results that improve oral health and appearance.
